Cold, Gray, Rainy…I’m staying in Bed!

I’m sure I’m not the only one wanting to stay in bed when it’s raining. Spring is on the way, but where I live we’ve headed back into cold and rainy territory. It’s been gross today, making me want to stay in bed all morning and curl up on the couch all afternoon. I did have plans to actually get stuff done, but that gray and wet sky just zapped all my energy. Here are some ideas for beating that bad-weather-Eeyore mood:

  1. Create a sunny environment indoors! Shut the curtains to block out the nasty weather and turn on bright lights and fun music to help boost your mood.
  2. Do household chores. I’m definitely not dragging myself to the gym today, so at least by picking active projects I’m killing two birds with one stone. Exercise, in any form, releases neurotransmitters which elevate your mood.
  3. Sleeping too little or too much can make you tired. Resist the temptation to stay in bed an extra hour on a rainy day.
  4. Increase your intake of vitamin C, omega 3s, and vitamin D. Less sunlight means less vitamin D, so you have to overcompensate.
  5. Get in some quality time with friends or family. Bad weather days often keep us inside and away from usual activities. Take advantage of this and play board games or cards with a loved one. Make phone calls or email friends. Enjoy the slower paced day!

I hope the sun comes out for you soon, wherever you live. Until then, try these out on bad weather days to help lift your spirits!
