Grandma was right. Warm milk with honey does help you sleep!!
The other night I had the worst stomach ache. My husband (being the sweet man that he is) sat up with me and brought me some milk. I asked him if milk really induces sleep and he said he didn’t know, it was just the only thing he could think of to help. Well, out of curiosity I had to find out the truth!
Tryptophan is the superstar substance credited for promoting sleep. WebMD listed milk, poultry, bananas, oats, and honey as being tryptophan-rich foods. In addition, they said Carbohydrate-rich foods complement dairy by increasing the level of tryptophan in the blood. Some good combinations of sleepy foods are the following:
- Bowl of cereal and milk
- Yogurt and crackers
- Bread and cheese
Two important warnings before following the recommended food list:
- Avoid carb snacks because they’re high in sugar. This will cause a subsequent sugar drop, which disturbs sleep.
- A little food may help you sleep, but this doesn’t mean you should pig out! Too much food will make you feel uncomfortable and cause your digestive system to work overtime when the body should be relaxing.
Happy sleeping!
