The TV show “The Doctors” recently tested a napping pod at Retreat Self-Care, located in the business district of Glendale, CA. According to the show, less than 70% of the U.S. population get 8 hrs of sleep per night. So out of curiosity I found an article published by the Glendale News Press. Kathy Geathers, a finance director at a Los Angeles Hospital, created a place where people could recharge and relax during the workday. This is where the pods come in…
When you sit down, the pod reclines to the position in which you are most comfortable. You’re given noise-canceling headphones and an iPod loaded with serene music. Then, a timer is set for about 20 to 30 minutes, keeping you from entering too deep a sleep and waking up groggy. When the session is over, a slight vibration wakes you up. Geathers stated, “Studies show that getting away from the work environment for a few minutes each day greatly reduces stress”. I, for one, could definitely use this! Hopefully, businesses will consider implementing something similar for their employees.
However, if you don’t have access to a place like Retreat Self-Care, find a quiet location on your break to catch a few zzz’s. Just be sure to set an alarm! If you can’t nap, at least take a short walk to get away from business and relieve stress so you can get through the rest of the day more productively!
