This question popped into my head because I just got home from a run and barely missed the sudden downpour. It’s raining heavily outside and I thought, “Wow, if only I was ready for a nap this would be perfect!” I love falling asleep to a hard rain. It’s soothing, peaceful and usually comes with a gorgeous grey sky setting the mood. I’m addicted to falling asleep to rain (which wouldn’t be the most productive if I lived somewhere like Seattle). Most nights, I set my iPod to heavy rain for 20 minutes. I’m out before the time is up.
According to The National Sleep Foundation, “White noise [sounds are] caused by things such as a fan, air conditioner, or radio static, that often block out unwanted noise and encourage sleep… Experts say the intensity, abruptness, regularity, intrusiveness, familiarity, and regularity of noises all affect sleep.” White noise is essential for light sleepers. For me, it’s almost impossible to sleep in dead silence. When it’s too quiet, my ears will find the slightest sound, keeping my body alert instead of relaxed for sleep.
