How many pillows do you have in your house?
Not counting all the decorative pillows we don’t use for sleeping, my husband and I have six! We’re only two people just starting our life together and yet we already have so many pillows! Why do we collect so many pillows? Is it because we haven’t found the right ones yet? How did you end up with the pillows you have?
Pillows have such a great impact on how well we sleep. And it’s important to figure out what kind is best for you based on your sleep position and body dimensions.
One way I like to find a good pillow is going to a mattress/pillow store and actually lying down to try different kinds. Personally, I think this is the best way to discover the right pillow for you. Usually the store employees know what kind is best for body shape and sleep position, etc.
My husband’s method of discovering what kind of pillow works best for him was to buy several. Normally I wouldn’t have agreed, but since we needed pillows for our guest room, I went along with him. A more economical way might be to take this initial PillowFit Quiz by Select Comfort. I thought it analyzed me pretty well. It suggested I use the Memory Foam Contour Pillow or the European Goose Down Pillow.
The most important thing I know about selectinf a pillow, is to pick one which allows you to keep your spine in alignment. For instance, if you sleep on your side, you will need a thick one to fill in the space between where your shoulder hits the mattress and where your head needs to be to keep your neck straight. If you sleep on your back, a medium sized pillow is better, and if you sleep on your stomach (which is really not healthy for your spine) ,you will need a thin pillow so your neck is not pushed upward. Sometimes I also put a pillow between my legs if my back is hurting. This helps to keep the spine in correct alignment.
Did you know your sleep position is also linked to a certain personality type? It’s probably different than what you expect, so if you want to discover your secret sleep personality check out this article on Select Comfort’s website.
Do you experience upper back and neck pain in the morning when you get up? If you do, it might be time to try a new pillow! Let me know how the search goes and what stores/companies give you the most help!
