On Massage for Life! Michael Rice provides a much-needed follow-along DVD for self-care. Even though we have all seen the statistics on how many therapists burn out after only a few years in practice, I have not seen a DVD like this before -- one specifically designed to guide you through a series of exercises for warming up, stretching, strengthening and balancing with the intention to nurture your well-being and your career.
Rice has extensive training and practice in yoga and Pilates along with a successful massage therapy career of many years. His explanations are clear and his pace is easy to follow. Beginning with a warm up sequence in Chapter 1, Rice moves through each body region from face to feet, culminating in a flow sequence in Chapter 9. In Chapter 8, he demonstrates strength training to build muscle tone starting with 3 sets of 12 repetitions with using 2-5 pound weights. Bulking up is not healthy for MTs because bulky muscles restrict our range of motion. He demonstrates how to use jelly balls for forearms and rubber bands for extensors. Using a chair for support, he shows strengthening exercises for hips, legs and abs.
This DVD will be particularly useful to massage therapists who need to develop self-care stretching and strengthening routines to do before and after seeing clients and also between clients to keep yourself energized, flexible, and focused.
